Common Childhood Diseases and When to Worry

A parent's guide to recognizing when a child's illness needs medical attention.

Share:

Children fall ill often while their immune systems are still developing. Most of those illnesses are mild and pass on their own.

The difficult part for parents is knowing which symptoms can be managed at home and which need a paediatrician. Here is the guidance our child specialists give most often.

1. Common and Usually Mild

These illnesses are a normal part of growing up.

Colds, coughs and short-lived viral fevers.
Ear infections, sore throats and mild stomach upsets.
Chickenpox and other rashes that come with a mild fever.

2. Care at Home

Comfort and fluids do most of the work in a mild illness.

Offer small amounts of fluid often to prevent dehydration.
Let your child rest and eat lightly as their appetite allows.
Give only medication and doses advised for your child's weight.

3. When to Call the Doctor

Some signs mean a child should be seen the same day.

Fever in a baby under three months, or a fever lasting beyond three days.
Difficulty breathing, unusual drowsiness or a fit.
Refusing fluids, very few wet nappies or a rash that does not fade under pressure.

4. Prevention Is Simpler Than Treatment

A few habits prevent most avoidable illness.

Keep vaccinations on schedule.
Teach regular hand washing before meals and after play.
Attend routine growth and development check-ups.
